Kia ora, 

While I could say being a journalist has been a dream since I was a young boy, and that this would be an opportunity for that boy's dream to become real...

The reality is my mum told me I should try journalism. 

Lord knows what she was thinking, but for the first time, I took her advice. 

What I could never have anticipated, though, is the extent to which I respect and admire my fellow tutors and pupils. 

I take inspiration from my child-like desire to tell stories. I feel like evoking awe and wonder is the ultimate prize for any writer - let alone a journalist. This is what I have begun learning at B-school. 

While I have a deep respect for my tutors, I also understand the world is changing. My goal is to carry the integrity and expertise of my teachers and apply them to the constantly evolving media space I live in.

In the future, I imagine authenticity as a driving force in the industry. John Campbell and Louis Theroux are huge inspirations of mine. Andrew Callaghan is a growing personality in the US that I have been watching to learn more about great journalism. 

I admire these journalists' ability to put the people at the forefront of the story - not themselves. 

Writing for the student magazine has also been an exciting avenue to develop my voice. It has taught me how publications operate, outside of the curriculum of the journalism course, and these are skills I'm excited to bring to the industry. Sooner rather than later. 

After all, my mum told me I should do this; we all know mums know best.
