A live cross can be an exhilarating experience for any broadcaster and brings real energy to a news story. NZBS student Cam finds out.

A live cross in journalism refers to a real-time broadcast where a reporter provides updates or coverage directly from the scene of a news event. For broadcasting students, learning how to conduct a live cross involves developing strong communication skills, such as speaking clearly and conducting interviews under pressure. They also gain technical expertise in operating broadcasting equipment, like cameras and microphones, and learn how to manage live streaming setups.

Students must be quick thinkers, adapting to unexpected situations while keeping the broadcast engaging and informative. Additionally, they refine their storytelling abilities to deliver concise, compelling narratives, often while coordinating with a behind-the-scenes team. They also focus on building on-camera presence, including voice control and body language, to connect with the audience effectively.
