New Zealand Broadcasting School
Where Media Careers Begin
The New Zealand Broadcasting School (NZBS) is Aotearoa’s leading provider of hands-on media education, known for preparing graduates to thrive in exciting careers across journalism, radio, screen production, digital storytelling, marketing, podcasting and more.
Based on the Ara campus in downtown Ōtautahi Christchurch, NZBS works closely with New Zealand's media industry to keep our teaching relevant, responsive and future-focused. Our students don’t just learn about media, they live and breathe it. From day one, they gain practical experience using industry-standard equipment and working on real-world projects.
With small class sizes and a tight-knit whānau, students are supported every step of the way through one-on-one guidance, strong peer networks and mentoring from our industry partners. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Each year, students come together across specialisation to work on various projects, including evolving the annual commerical radio station (built from the ground up by radio students) into a fully integrated multimedia brand a hands-on, high-stakes project that mirrors how real media teams work.
We offer a Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications with three specialisations: Journalism, Radio and Screen Production. Students spend two years on campus, then complete their studies with a six-month paid industry placement a unique NZBS experience. With over 90% of graduates securing work in related media fields, it’s a proven pathway into the industry.
